What this operation usually hauls

Steel, pipe, lumber, building materials and machinery on an open deck, step deck or RGN. Nothing is protected by walls, so securement, tarps and chains are part of the job — and part of how a claim happens.

What shippers and brokers usually ask for

  • Auto liability at the limit the shipper writes into the certificate.
  • Motor truck cargo, often at a higher limit because steel and machinery are worth more than a van load.
  • Physical damage covering the trailer as well as the tractor.
  • Cargo policies read closely for securement and tarping terms, since that is where flatbed claims start.

Coverage names below are general. What your contract actually requires depends on the shipper, the broker and the carrier. Alimar confirms it with you on the call.

What tends to drive the premium

  • The commodity and the cargo limit it forces.
  • Loss history tied to securement: shifted, dropped or weather-damaged loads.
  • Trailer type and whether you run regional or long haul.

Questions we get on the phone

Cargo coverage is a separate piece from liability, and what it covers depends on the policy wording and what you haul. Tell us your typical freight and we will go through it with you.

DOT or MC number, truck and trailer VINs, driver list, and your current declarations page if you already carry a policy.

Owned trailers are normally listed by VIN. Rented or interchanged trailers are handled differently. Send the trailer details and we confirm how yours is set up.

Underwriters do ask how you secure and cover freight, and it can affect what a carrier offers. It is worth telling us how you actually load.

Send the broker name and email. During office hours we work on it the same business day, and most go out within the hour.

General answers, not a promise of coverage or price. Alimar confirms your situation on the call.
